Waiting for Tea Again on We Heart It. http://weheartit.com/entry/10974496

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

"Making fiction for children, making books for children, isn’t something you do for money. It’s something you do because what children read and learn and see and take in changes them and forms them, and they make the future. They make the world we’re going to wind up in, the world that will be here when we’re gone."

True Story

  • random girl at Starbucks talking to her friend: This isn't even offensive. Like, it's my heritage. *turns to me* You know what I'm talking about, right?
  • me: ....yeah, no matter how you slice it, Confederate flags are offensive and inappropriate.
  • random girl: Um, they don't stand for what they used to.
  • me: No, actually, they do. Sorry.
  • random girl: If you had, like, an African flag tattoo or whatever, I wouldn't be bitching about it.
  • me: First of all, I'm not directly descended from Africa. And second of all, When Africans are feeling feisty, none of them don white sheets and chase black people around with nooses and pitchforks
  • me: or get mad when the government tells them to stop treating black people like shit
  • random girl: MY ANCESTORS DIDN'T DO THAT. THEY JUST FOUGHT IN THE CONFEDERACY.
  • me: So did mine, aaaand you don't see me with a Confederate Flag tattooed on my foot.
